menu of the week
lately i have tried so many great mexican dishes from pinterest i decided to do a bit of a round up on my blog. bon appetit! or should i say ole!
sour cream chicken enchiladas
healthy turkey tacos
chipotle mango bbq chicken salad
light mexican chicken casserole
turkey enchilada casserole
ok as i linked all of these recipes i realized these can barely be passed as mexican food and are surely not traditional. we americans sure love our casseroles when attempting mexican. well at least the family gobbled it up.

don't carpe diem
i really enjoyed reading THIS ARTICLE that a friend posted on facebook today. there is not much more i can say that she hasn't already, except that it is refreshing to read honest feelings from a mother of small children. a good read after a long day.

nutella, take me away...
reason number 372 why nutella should not be kept in my home:
at lunch today ozzie decided to eat his turkey meatball soup on the floor after ithreatened asked him to eat at the table. he then dumped the bowl on the living room rug forcing me to run into the laundry room for the, properly named, nature's miracle carpet cleaner (it works miracles and is heaven sent). while i was grabbing the cleaner, olivia decided to climb onto the kitchen table and pour ozzie's entire glass of water all over it. she then began to paint the water with her hands and feet in between licks attempting to drink the puddles. i was immediately forced to decide which mess to clean first. i went for the soup since it would stain and stink up the rug. ozzie sees that i don't go for olivia's throat and decides i'm okay with the wading pool now sitting on our kitchen table and decides to help his sister by creating waterfalls of water onto the floor.
after losing my schmidt, getting both messes cleaned up and both kids in their rooms for quiet time/nap time/flat out punishment for unacceptable behavior, do i go for a jog on the treadmill to let off some steam? nope. complete something on my to do list to give me a sense of accomplishment and remind me that there is life outside the gates of hell? nuh uh. i scoop up a gigantic dollop of nutella and melt it over banana slices, sit down on my lap top and begin this blog post. ahhh nutella, take me away....

cloud dough
thanks to pinterest we have been trying different sensory crafts lately. one ozzie particularly liked was cloud dough or as he called it "snow".
i found this pin for cloud dough but cut the recipe in half, it kept both kids busy while i cooked dinner. actually it was the quietest hour before dinner ever in the history of our family. the hour before dinner is what i like to call our bewitching hour- tired, hungry and sometimes bored kids equals a short ride to crazy town! the cloud dough kept the kids so busy i finished dinner early and had time to snap a few pictures.

olivia's winter wonderland
from the moment we found out we were having a girl, i knew olivia's first birthday would be a winter wonderland. partially because it gave me an excuse to keep my birch bark tubes out past christmas; although, thanks to pinterest, now i know i can keep the tubes out all year long and just change the flowers seasonally. on a side note, pinterest really is the website that is changing all of our lives for the better. now we are expressing our inner most thoughts through cleverly designed subway art, attempting whole new levels of diy with endless tutorials, trying new recipes for quinoa, chick peas and kale weekly, redecorating and reorganizing our homes with free labels and printables, and even getting fashion, hair and beauty help to get us out of our ruts- all from this fantastic new website. yay pinterest! which, by the way, i still pronounce PIN INTEREST because even though i'm addicted and on the site daily, my mind can not combine the two words.
but i digress, the second and more important reason for olivia's winter wonderland is natalie merchant's song wonder. i was in my early twenties when her album tiger lily was released and the minute i heard wonder i knew it would be my anthem to my future daughter. i knew i would play it and sing it to her often, especially on her birthdays. so naturally when olivia was born in the winter, my mind began dreaming of her first birthday as a winter wonderland.
first were the invitations. invitations have always been important to me. remember ozzie's first and second birthdays? i truly believe they properly introduce the theme to your guests while creating fun anticipation of the party decor. an old friend from elementary school offered to help create her invitations seen below. she did such a beautiful job. please contact meredith at meredith magnusson for your own design needs.

olivia's birthday colors were white, shades of brown and a touch of purple. i used the background of the invitation to create the wrap around mailing labels. now comes the decorations-did i get some use out of my birch tubes!
i wanted to set the stage from the get go so i set up an antique sled, filled a vintage wood crate with birch logs and added some snowey branches to a galvanized vase. i kept our christmas wreath and removed all of the decorations before flocking it- amazingly it stayed alive! our please knock sign hung on mossy branches- i do have a fascination for tree branches, the mossier the better.
a tablescape of birch tubes, birds and furry owls, dried cotton bolls and pods from kansas cotton girls on etsy and two coconut cakes. snow flakes hung from the ceiling and a vintage white christmas tree.
the over done personalized water bottle, happy birthday garland, sign for the cake smashing, birthday cakes with mini snowflake garlands and homemade playdough shaped into glittery snowballs as the birthday favors. i used the same recipe as ozzie's train playdough favor but added peppermint extract. after the dough cooled, i sprinkled it with martha stewart's white glitter and also rolled each ball into more glitter. i tied two snowballs in a clear plastic bags with jute, added a favor tag and viola easy peasy birthday favors. the mini snowflake garland was made with a cricut snowflake cartridge. i glued the snowflakes to a white sewing thread and tied it to the wood skewers.
the favor tag i made using the background of the invitation. this is really easy. i used microsoft publisher and chose a blank label then added the background and text boxes. i used the same file for the water bottle labels.
hot cocoa bar with cake pops, marshmallows, cookies, peppermint marshmallow pops, caramel sauce and homemade sugar cubes. my friends live on a large property and cut up some small logs for me. after cleaning the logs with deck cleaner, i painted one side with chalkboard paint and used them as food labels for both the cocoa bar and the food table. i made vignettes with vintage ball jars filled with vintage christmas trees, miniature deer and fake snow. the deer were actually old candles i found at a flea market. too cute!
almost all of these ideas came from pinterest- here are the links:
cake pops- peppermint flavored but dipped in chocolate and white chocolate with purple sprinkles
as i mentioned earlier, the song wonder was my main inspiration for olivia's birthday. since my goal is to always sing the song to her on her birthday, i thought it would be nice if all of her guests read the chorus along with me. again i used the background of her invitation but reduced the brown to 60% to make reading easier and created a small quote sheet for guests to read. oscar caught the whole thing along with my speech behind the song on video and i am tickled that olivia will have this for the rest of her life. my goal is to eventually cross stitch the chorus onto muslin to hang in olivia's bedroom.
my darling olivia. while all of her pictures are adorable, i am particularly loving the second to the bottom right where she looks completely terrified of the burning candle coming towards her. i didn't get a good picture of her birthday outfit but i ironed on the number one in rhinestones, you can barely see this in the upper right picture. gotta love a bedazzled first birthday shirt!
when all is said and done, olivia's first birthday was a success but just like ozzie's birthdays, there aren't enough pictures of our guests, not one picture of the birthday girl with mom and dad, and so many other things i forgot to do since i am always running around like a chicken with my head cut off. when will i ever learn to keep the parties small and easy? probably never!
in the spirit of pinterest (still pronouncing it PIN INTEREST), i created blank wrap around mailing labels in two colors if anyone would like to print them. the first is the original purple and the second in dark brown. just click on the picture to save the jpeg file to your computer. enjoy!

Make It Wish List
In my current state of nesting and organizing everything around me, I have decided to use my blog as a reminder of all of the wonderful things I want to make as seen on the internet.
So you will notice the new list on the right column of my blog titled, Make It Wish List. I know it is already quite a long list and I am expecting baby number two any day now but you can't blame me for wishing!
My goal is to make something, post it on my blog, delete it from my wish list and, of course, replace it with something new! Call me crazy but this is what I call fun (said the crazy housewife). I may just throw caution to the wind and make a recipe wish list too. Woot!

Menu of the Week
Next week's menu of the week is all about preparing for our baby girl's arrival. I really want to have several meals cooked, frozen and ready to reheat during those first few crucial weeks. Like last week, it seems I have been monopolized by one or two food blogs for this week's menu. Here is what I came up with.
Dinners:
Cheater Italian Wedding Soup
Crock Pot Braised Short Ribs
Goldfish Crusted Chicken Nuggets
Creamy Chicken Enchiladas
Ham Bone Soup- the Honey Baked Ham recipe from their bean mix.
Breakfast: typically I don't meal plan for breakfast but with Oscar home on paternity leave, I thought I'd try a few new ones.
Banana Oatmeal Bake- old wives tales say that oatmeal helps breast milk come in and this sounded super yummy.
Jocelyn's Chicken Sausage and Potatoes- my dear friend Jocelyn made this for the bambina's baby shower. Our CSA box included fingerling potatoes this week so I have to make these for Oscar. Recipe coming soon.
And, because I know myself all too well, desserts ready to pick me up from all those sleepless nights:
Crazy Good Chocolate Chip Bite Sizers
Triple Chocolate Banana Bread Muffins
Whole Wheat Banana Bread
I have already frozen a few dishes or left overs from previous weeks.
Slow Cooker Butter Chicken- from last week's menu. This was delicious and made plenty of left overs to freeze for later.
Red Beans and Rice
Turkey Spaghetti

Menu of the Week
After attending a meeting with my mom/playgroup where everyone discussed their meal planning strategies, I decided to add my weekly meal plan to my blog. So many of my favorite food bloggers do it I thought I should throw my hat in the ring. It just took me several months to get my first post up!
Meal planning is a great way to take the stress out of the age old question, "What's for dinner?". Now I know what I am going to cook every night and can prepare dinner while Ozzie naps. When I am super organized, I cook a lot of the meals on Sunday & freeze them until they are ready to be eaten. It also has saved us money because we are no longer wasting food. I buy exactly what I need and at the end of the week, the refrigerator is close to empty. I love that the most because I am not spending my entire Sunday throwing away old food that got lost in the refrigerator. It even saves me time in the grocery store because I have my handy dandy little list, which of course is organized by store aisle, and am no longer wondering the store aimlessly trying to figure out what to buy.
Another convenience that I love is our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) box (the picture above is from one of our boxes- yummy local organic fruits and vegetables) that is delivered every Tuesday. If I am diligent about meal planning, I can adjust our fruits & vegetables accordingly prior to delivery. Another savings of time, money and food!
So one goal for my blog this year is to share my Menu of the Week. Of course I choose the week before my second child is born to take on this new task but fingers crossed I'll keep up most of the time. Oh and I am not organized enough to add side dishes every week. We usually eat a lot of salads but if I make a fancy vegetable side, I will try to include it.
With that said... drum roll please. Here is this week's Menu of the Week:
Slow Cooker Butter Chicken
Creamy Turkey Taquitos
Roasted Chicken with Baby Red Potatoes
Grown Up Mac and Cheese
Turkey Burger with Basil Aioli
Baked Chicken in Tomato Sauce with Olives
Can you tell I'm loving the blog Meal Planning 101? Happy Cooking!

Creamy Turkey Taquitos
Trying some Super Bowl recipes that are all over the blogs right now. Our little girl should arrive before the Super Bowl so I thought it would be fun to try out some recipes for us to eat on the big day since neither of us will be making any big game parties with a newborn.
Tonight I made these taquitos from Meal Planning 101 except I substituted the ground beef in her recipe with ground turkey. We are not huge beef eaters any more. They were delicious. If you are ever craving the famous crispy beef burrito from Taco Time and want a homemade, lower fat version, give these a try. They scream pot luck or Super Bowl party and will be an instant hit- guaranteed!

Sewing 101: Learn to Spell Your Name Bean Bags
In my ongoing effort to teach myself how to sew, I decided to try Lil Blue Boo's bean bag tutorial. A friend's twin daughters turned three and I figured this would be a fun addition to their gift while helping me learn how to sew straight lines. Have I told you that I still can't sew a straight line? Another friend's daughter is close to the same age so I went ahead and made her one too. Along with my little guy. Practice makes perfect, right?
I did make one modification. Since I have no business using the fabric paint she used (I know my limits), I used my handy dandy cricut to cut the letters out on paper. Then I traced the letters onto felt that I treated with fabric stiff. I highly recommend fabric stiff for any of your fabric crafts. It helped with sewing the letters onto the bean bags as well.
That is A LOT of practice!
I thought this was funny because I was snapping picture after picture and didn't realize my pregnant belly was in the shot until after I uploaded the pictures onto my computer. Whoops!
Ozzie loves his bean bags and is constantly throwing them around and I gotta say it has worked. He only knew "O" for Ozzie but now he has "Z" down too! Not too bad for a little boy who refuses to learn his numbers and letters. Yay for learning how to sew!
